Mangsa ribut dapat perhatian wakil rakyat
KAMPAR - Hujan lebat berserta angin kencang yang melanda beberapa kampung di daerah ini dua hari lalu menyebabkan banyak rumah penduduk mengalami kerosakan dengan sesetengahnya berpunca daripada dihempap pokok tumbang. Serentak itu juga, ramai dalam kalangan mereka kehilangan tempat tinggal berikutan rumah mereka tercabut bumbung dan rosak setelah diterbangkan angin serta ditimpa dahan pokok yang tumbang. Menyedari masalah itu, Timbalan Menteri Luar yang juga Ahli Parlimen Kampar, Datuk Lee Chee Leong turun padang berjumpa mangsa ribut itu dengan menyampaikan bantuan bagi meringankan beban mereka yang kehilangan sementara tempat tinggal.

Cordial Malaysia-Indonesia Ties Should Consider New Elements
PUTRAJAYA, Nov 12 (Bernama) -- The cordial relations between Malaysia and Indonesia that has existed for so long should be further strengthened by taking into consideration new elements in line with the new structure in Indonesia under the administration of President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono, said Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak.The Prime Minister said the new elements comprised the media, members of parliament and various other groups who also contributed directly or indirectly to the bilateral diplomatic relations."I suggest that we not only continue to maintain the traditional ties namely the government-to-government ties, the relations between the Indonesian National Military (TNI) and the Malaysian Defence Forces (ATM), and police-to-police relations, but to look also at the new Indonesian structure so that there will be a sense of influence that must be nurtured," he said at the dinner in honour of Susilo's visit to Malaysia at his residence, Sri Satria, here Wednesday night.Najib said the close relationship with the media, if not developed carefully, could lead to the media making various assumptions that could result in undesired situations cropping up."The parliament is also important. Members of parliament cannot be taken for granted. We also need to nurture good relations between the two parliaments as well as the various parties," he said.The prime Minister said the close friendship between the two governments should filter down to the various sectors and groups in the two countries.Meanwhile, Susilo in his speech said the close proximity between Malaysia and Indonesia and the friendship that had been established for so long resulted in both countries being frequently exposed to contradicting opinions.He said such a scenario should not be allowed to jeopardise the existing relationship and should instead be treated with care and wisdom."I always say that Indonesia has never had any problems with Rwanda or Colombia because our positions are so far apart but with Malaysia we certainly have occasional differences but what encourages me is that we all realise that it is normal."What is important is that we both look at it intelligently and wisely so that everything can be handled smoothly," he said.Susilo said Malaysia and Indonesia were now undergoing a major change in the world including Asean's new emergence as an economic power.He said bilateral cooperation between the two countries played a major role and contributed significantly in improving the global economy particularly in the Asian region.Also present at the dinner were Susilo's wife, Ibu Ani Yudhoyono, the Prime Minister's wife, Datin Seri Rosmah Mansor, Deputy prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin and wife Puan Sri Norainee Abdul Rahman.-- BERNAMA: Ramjit-->

Asri May Join Politics As A Platform To Preach
KOTA BAHARU, Nov 9 (Bernama) -- Former Perlis Mufti Dr Mohd Asri Zainol Abidin today indicated that he may join politics so that he can continue with his dakwah (preaching) activities.Although he had no prior intention of joining politics as he was more interested in the propagation of Islamic thinking, he said, he would do so as a last resort if that could provide him with a platform to continue engaging in dakwah activities."If all avenues are closed and I cannot speak unless I am doing so on a political platform, then I will have to rethink my next move. I hope this won't happen," he told reporters after meeting Menteri Besar Datuk Nik Abdul Aziz Nik Mat at the latter's office in Kota Darulnaim, here on Monday.He was responding to reporters' question whether he would join politics to pursue his preaching activities following his detention by the Selangor Islamic Religious Department (Jais) on Nov 2 for conducting a religious class without a certification of authority.Meanwhile, Dr Mohd Asri denied that the meeting with Nik Abdul Aziz was a prelude of him joining politics.He said that he met Nik Abdul Aziz a show of respect as the Kelantan menteri besar was supportive of his dakwah movement.He also denied that he subscribed to Wahhabism, saying the accusation was not new.-- BERNAMA

Tuntutan palsu: MP Sabak Bernam antara 6 didakwa
SHAH ALAM, Nov 3 - Ahli Parlimen Sabak Bernam dari Barisan Nasional (BN), Datuk Abdul Rahman Bakri dan lima yang lain termasuk dua dari Pakatan Rakyat — kesemuanya dari Selangor — dikenakan tuduhan memalsukan tuntutan antara awal 2008 dan 2009.
Abdul Rahman, dari Umno, mengaku tidak bersalah semasa dihadapkan di Mahkamah Sesyen di sini pagi tadi atas lapan tuduhan memalsukan tuntutan berjumlah RM80,000 semasa beliau menjadi ADUN Sg Air Tawar.
Beliau dituduh melakukan kesalahan itu antara Januari dan Februari 2008 iaitu ketika menjelang pilihan raya umum ke-12.
Tuntutan-tuntutan itu, antaranya, membabitkan pemberian hadiah dan cenderahati untuk pelajar cemerlang, program Mesra Rakyat dan program Maulud Nabi.
Mahkamah membenarkan beliau diikat jamin dengan seorang penjamin manakala kesnya akan didengar pada 14 Disember ini.
Abdul Rahman diiringi sekumpulan penyokongnya dan juga beberapa ahli Parlimen.
Dalam pada itu, pembantu khas kepada Exco kerajaan Selangor Ronnie Liu, Wong Chuan How juga mengaku tidak bersalah terhadap tuduhan mengemukakan invois palsu kepada Majlis Daerah Sepang tahun lalu.
Wong dikenakan tuduhan itu di mahkamah yang sama.
Invois itu adalah bagi pembekalan 2,500 bendera kereta bernilai RM2,500 sempena program Hari Kemerdekaan tetapi pembekalan itu tidak dilakukan.
Wong dituduh melakukan kesalahan itu pada 10 September 2008 di Pejabat Daerah Sepang.
Wong, 51, juga mengaku tidak bersalah melakukan pecah amanah berhubung sekeping cek bernilai RM5,000 untuk wang berhubung penganjuran perjumpaan Jawatankuasa Pembangunan Persekutuan dan Jawatankuasa Keselamatan dan Kemajuan Kampung di Sungai Pelek, 19 Februari lalu.
Di Mahkamah Sesyen yang lain, Wong juga mengaku tidak bersalah melakukan pecah amanah cek bernilai RM2,500 membabitkan program gotong-royong di kawasan Dewan Undangan Negeri Sungai Pelek antara 30 Julai dan 16 September 2008.
Kedua-dua tuduhan pecah amanah itu didakwa dilakukan di Pejabat Daerah Sepang.
Kes membabitkan Wong akan didengar antara 29 Mac dan 9 April tahun depan. Sembilan saksi akan dipanggil untuk memberi keterangan.
Turut didakwa ialah bekas Ahli Dewan Undangan Negeri (ADUN) Teratai dari Gerakan, Yap Soo Soon yang berhadapan dengan tujuh tuduhan mengemukakan tuntutan palsu berasingan bagi program-program yang tidak wujud tahun lalu.
Selain Yap, turut didakwa hari ini ialah seorang pengarah syarikat GLC, Firdaus Abu Karim yang berhadapan dengan tujuh tuduhan.
Firdaus didakwa mengemukakan invois bagi tuntutan palsu menggunakan borang permohonan kerajaan yang palsu melibatkan RM10,000 bagi majlis-majlis yang tidak wujud.
Firdaus bersubahat dengan Yap bagi kesalahan tersebut.
Sementara itu, pembantu Abdul Rahman, Mohd. Rosli Bushra pula didakwa bersubahat dengan bosnya.
Mohd. Rosli minta dia dibicarakan dan dibebaskan dengan ikat jamin RM9,000.
Firdaus dan Yap yang masing-masing dibenarkan ikat jamin RM8,000 dan RM25,000 akan dibicarakan bersama.
Kes mereka akan disebut semula pada 14 Disember ini dengan perbicaraan membabitkan Firdaus dari 26 April hingga 7 Mei manakala Yap pula antara 3 hingga 7 Mei.
Bekas pembantu khas Menteri Besar Selangor, Mohd. Yahya Mat Sahri turut didakwa atas tuduhan menipu dan menggunakan dokumen palsu berhubung pembiayaan majlis sambutan 100 hari Pakatan Rakyat tahun lalu.
Dia menghadapi dua tuduhan membabitkan sumbangan RM50,000.
Yahya yang dibebaskan dengan ikat jamin RM10,000 akan menghadapi perbicaraan dari 12 hingga 16 April bagi tuduhan pertama dan dari 19 hingga 23 April bagi tuduhan kedua.

Kit Siang calls for Attorney-General’s resignation
KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 4 — DAP parliamentary leader Lim Kit Siang wants Attorney-General Tan Sri Gani Patail to resign for failing to take action against former Transport Minister Chan Kong Choy for criminal breach of trust.
Lim also called for a royal commission of inquiry to further investigate the Public Accounts Committee (PAC) findings as well as to investigate why the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC), the Attorney-General and other key institutions had failed address the Port Klang Free Zone (PKFZ) scandal.
The PAC has recommended that former Transport Minister Datuk Seri Chan Kong Choy and former Port Klang Authority (PKA) general manager Datin Paduka O.C. Phang be investigated for criminal breach of trust in the PKFZ scandal.
It also recommended investigations into the role of other government officials serving in PKA when the project was being developed.
The report also confirmed that RM645.87 million would have been saved if the PKFZ land had been acquired under the Land Acquisition Act 1960, for then it would have cost only RM442.13 million and not RM1.088 billion before interest.
Based on the verbatim report of the PAC, the MACC Director of Investigations Datuk Mohd Shukri Abdull acknowledged that MACC already knew of the three letters of support.
Lim questioned the purpose of PAC recommending that MACC further investigate Chan when the commission had already investigated and cleared the former transport minister from committing a breach of trust in unlawfully issuing the three letters of support.
“The Attorney-General in his submission before the PAC reiterated that as far the Attorney-General's Chambers was concerned the letters of support are implicit guarantees committing the government. The question is not that the facts have been revealed the first time, the facts have been here all along.
"So what is the purpose of PAC making a recommendation to MACC when they have investigated and have made no arrests?” he explained at a press conference in Parliament.
Lim wanted to know why Gani had failed to take any action against Chan when he had appeared before the PAC to reiterate that Chan had unlawfully given an implicit government guarantee in the three letters of support which he had no power to give as transport minister.
He also urged action be taken by the government and requested that the Parliament should have a special debate on the PAC report on the PKFZ scandal.

Pakatan finally applies to be formal coalition
KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 4 — At last, Pakatan Rakyat (PR) has taken a big step towards formalising its alliance in order to go head on with Barisan Nasional (BN) as a registered coalition at the next general election.
The Malaysian Insider understands that officials from the PR alliance handed in their application to be made a formal coalition to the Registrar of Societies (RoS) some time earlier this week.
According to government sources, some 10 names each from DAP, PAS and PKR were listed in the registration form, together with a list of common objectives, which are expected to be laid out when the alliance holds its first convention next month.
A logo bearing a “rising sun” was also tendered — signalling a “new dawn” for the country — as the fledgling opposition front's symbol against BN's dacing, or scale.
The PR bloc believes its application this time will pass muster, based on the new stand taken by the Registrar of Societies Datuk Md Alias Kalil.
Md Alias had publicly stated that the previous reading of Section 2 of the Societies Act 1966, which states any coalition of political parties must have at least seven political parties as members to be registered did not apply.
The loose alliance of PKR, DAP and PAS first came together in the wake of the landmark March 8 general election last year, which saw its members wrest control of four key states from BN in spite of fundamental differences in philosophies.
But it remains to be seen if PKR, PAS and DAP will be able to settle their various spats within their respective parties as well as with each other and present a force capable of challenging BN.
The growing infighting within all three parties — from Sabah PKR leaders quitting in protest against heavy-handed treatment from its peninsula-based central leadership to frequent eruptions between the religious PAS and socialist DAP — has only served to diminish their viability in the eyes of the increasingly weary and wary public.
PR will need to keep in mind that many of the votes cast were also an act of protest against BN for perceived arrogance.

For a number of Port Klang voters, yesterday was the first time they have laid eyes on elected representative Badrul Hisham Abdullah, whose face was splashed across most newspaper front-page for quitting PKR. When Malaysiakini visited Port Klang town, most locals interviewed said they were unaware of what Badrul Hisham looked like prior to this, because they had never seen him before...
